We use words all the time, but “they’re completely unknown in animal systems,” says linguist Noam Chomsky, Institute Emeritus Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “We have no idea how they evolved, when they evolved, where they came from. “” He says we don’t really even know how they work. “We have very little understanding of how each person has [words] innately as part of their fundamental nature.”
