The Peacock – The Bird That Showed Darwin’s Theory Does Not Work

Joel Kontinen

Charles Darwin did not understand why natural selection had produced so much beauty in nature. He assumed that nature should have been indifferent to aesthetical matters.

In many cases beauty hinders the survival of animals.

In 1870 Darwin tried to show in his book The Descent of Man that peahens were enthralled by the peacock’s long tail.

He came up with the theory of sexual selection in order to account for this beauty.

However, recent research has shown that peahens don’t think too much about the peacock’s tail. In other words. Darwin’s theory is wrong.
